SECTIONS 19335-19336

19335.  This act shall be known and may be cited as the ReadingInitiative Program.19336.  The State Librarian shall establish the Reading InitiativeProgram with funds appropriated for that purpose and with fundsreceived from private sources. The State Librarian shall administerthe program, for which purpose he or she shall do all of thefollowing: (a) Develop a list of recommended books, in consultation withvarious groups, including, but not limited to, teachers, librarians,parents, writers, publishers, and employees of the State Departmentof Education. The recommended books shall supplement thestate-recommended English/language arts curriculum framework, andshall include recreational reading selections for children. (b) Develop a method of involving pupils enrolled in kindergartenand grades 1 to 12, inclusive, in the program and an appropriate formof recognition for pupils who volunteer to participate in theprogram and who succeed in the program. Rewards and relatedrecognition activities shall be funded with amounts received fromprivate sources. (c) To the extent private funds are available, and consistent withsubdivision (b), expend private funds received by the StateLibrarian for the purposes of this article to obtain and makeavailable to the public the books on the list developed pursuant tosubdivision (a) .
