Part l. General Provisions.

§ 122C‑201.  Declarationof policy.

It is State policy toencourage voluntary admissions to facilities.  It is further State policy thatno individual shall be involuntarily committed to a 24‑hour facilityunless that individual is mentally ill or a substance abuser and dangerous toself or others.  All admissions and commitments shall be accomplished underconditions that protect the dignity and constitutional rights of theindividual.

It is further State policythat, except as provided in G.S. 122C‑212(b), individuals who have beenvoluntarily admitted shall be discharged upon application and thatinvoluntarily committed individuals shall be discharged as soon as a lessrestrictive mode of treatment is appropriate.
