Sale of vehicle, procedure to follow--use of voided plates, penaltyfor.

301.150. 1. License plates issued to owners of motor vehiclesregistered pursuant to the monthly series system of registration asprovided in section 301.030 shall be removed on the sale or transfer ofownership of such vehicles. The plates, if still current, may thereafterbe retained and preserved by the person to whom issued, to be fastened tosuch other motor vehicles as such person shall thereafter register in theperson's name.

2. If application for registration of another motor vehicle is notmade to the director of revenue within one year following the sale ortransfer of ownership of a motor vehicle, the license plates held by theperson who sold or transferred ownership of such motor vehicle shall bedeclared void, and new license plates bearing the same numbers may beissued to another registrant.

3. It shall be unlawful to fasten voided plates to any motor vehicle.Violation of this section shall be punishable under section 301.440.
