§17E‑11.  Application and construction of Chapter.

(a)        Nothing in thisChapter shall apply to the sheriff elected by the people.

(b)        Nothing in thisChapter shall be construed as modifying the character of a sheriff from anelective office, or as modifying the character of the office of deputy sherifffrom an appointive office.

(c)        If a justiceofficer, or a criminal justice officer as defined in G.S. 17C‑2(c),becomes sheriff, the justice officer is not required to maintain certificationfor the period served as sheriff.  The Commission shall reinstate certificationupon the conclusion of the period of service as sheriff and in conformance withthe rules of the Commission for the application for certification.
