32-1934. Pharmacy operated by hospital
A. A pharmacy operating in connection with a hospital shall comply with all the
provisions of this chapter requiring registration and regulation of pharmacies and with
board rules.
B. A pharmacy operating in connection with a hospital shall also meet the following
requirements:
1. In hospitals with fifty beds or more, the pharmacy shall be under the continuous
supervision of a pharmacist during the time it is open for pharmacy services, except that
the board by rule may establish requirements to allow a pharmacist who is engaged in
hospital business to be in other areas of the hospital that are located outside the
pharmacy.
2. In hospitals with less than fifty beds, with the written approval and
recommendations of the board, the services of a pharmacist shall be required on a
part-time basis according to the needs of the hospital, provided that this approval does
not permit the compounding, manufacturing, dispensing, labeling, packaging or processing
of drugs by other than a pharmacist.
3. In the pharmacist's absence from the hospital, the supervisory registered nurse
may obtain from the pharmacy necessary doses of drugs that are ordered by a medical
practitioner and that are needed by a patient in an emergency, according to procedures
recommended and approved by the board for each hospital.
4. All drugs and medications furnished from the pharmacy to patients on discharge
from the hospital shall be dispensed by a pharmacist and the medication shall be properly
labeled.
5. The pharmacist in charge shall initiate procedures to provide for the
administrative and technical guidance in all matters pertaining to the acquiring,
stocking, record keeping and dispensing of drugs and devices.
