38-538. Designation of state and political
subdivision motor vehicles; definition


A. Except as provided in section 38-538.03, a motor vehicle owned or leased for six
months or more by this state shall bear the designations "State of Arizona--(name of
department or agency)" and "for official use only" in letters that are no more than two
inches in height. The designation "for official use only" shall appear above the
designation "State of Arizona--(name of department or agency)". The designations shall
be on a decal that is placed on:


1. The rear window of the motor vehicle in an area that does not interfere with the
driver's ability to safely operate the motor vehicle.


2. The rear bumper of the motor vehicle if the motor vehicle does not have a rear
window.


B. A motor vehicle owned or leased for six months or more by a political
subdivision of this state shall:


1. Bear the designation of the name of the political subdivision of this state and
the department or agency of the political subdivision that owns or leases the motor
vehicle in a visible manner as determined by the political subdivision.


2. Have placed on the motor vehicle in a visible manner as determined by the
political subdivision the designation "for official use only".


C. For the purposes of this section, "political subdivision" includes an
organization that is tax exempt as a political subdivision under the constitution or laws
of this state.
