542.040. Proceedings before associate circuit judge--jury--verdict--recognizance--costs.
542.040. Upon such person being brought before suchassociate circuit judge, the associate circuit judge shall summonall witnesses which either party may require, and cause thematters charged in the complaint to be inquired into by a jury ofsix competent citizens. If the jury find that there is goodreason to fear the commission of the offense charged, then theyshall render a verdict of guilty against the defendant, and theassociate circuit judge thereupon shall require the defendant toenter into a recognizance in such sum, not exceeding one thousanddollars, as he shall direct, with one or more sufficientsureties, conditioned that the defendant will keep the peacetoward the people of the state, and particularly toward thecomplainant, for such time as shall be specified in saidrecognizance, which shall be not less than three months nor morethan one year from the date thereof; and the defendant shall beliable for costs as in other cases of conviction.
