Part 3. Textbooks.

§ 115C‑85.  Textbook needs are determined bycourse of study.

When the State Board of Education has adopted, upon the recommendationof the Superintendent of Public Instruction, a standard course of study at eachinstructional level in the elementary school and the secondary school, settingforth what subjects shall be taught at each level, it shall proceed to selectand adopt textbooks.

As used in this part, "textbook" means systematicallyorganized material comprehensive enough to cover the primary objectivesoutlined in the standard course of study for a grade or course. Formats fortextbooks may be print or nonprint, including hardbound books, softbound books,activity‑oriented programs, classroom kits, and technology‑basedprograms that require the use of electronic equipment in order to be used inthe learning process.

Textbooks adopted in accordance with the provisions of this Part shallbe used by the public schools of the State except as provided in G.S. 115C‑98(b1).(1955, c. 1372, art. 24,s. 1; 1959, c. 693, s. 1; 1969, c. 519, s. 1; 1981, c. 423, s. 1; 1993 (Reg.Sess., 1994), c. 677, s. 20; 1995 (Reg.
