ยง13-4ย Board members; term, vacancies.ย (a)ย The term of office of members of the board shall be for four yearsbeginning on the day of the special election held in conjunction with thegeneral election of the year in which they are elected and ending on the day ofthe special election held in conjunction with the second general election aftertheir election, except as provided in subsection (c).ย Members of the board maybe re-elected without restriction as to the number of terms.
(b)ย Any vacancy that may occur through anycause other than the expiration of the term of office shall be filled inaccordance with section 17-6.
(c)ย Members of the board elected at thespecial election held in conjunction with the general election in 1984 shall bedivided into two classes.ย There shall be seven members in the first class whoshall hold office for a term of four years beginning with their election andending on the day of the special election held in conjunction with the secondgeneral election after their election.ย The remaining members shall comprisethe second class and shall hold office for a term of two years beginning withtheir election and ending on the day of the special election held inconjunction with the next general election after their election, and thenmembers of the second class shall be elected to four year terms.
Membership in the first class shall consistof:ย three members who are elected with the highest number of votes from thefirst school board district as designated under section 13-1, who are notrequired to reside in any particular departmental school district and onemember elected from each odd-numbered departmental school district.ย Membershipof the second class shall consist of the remaining elected school boardmembers.
