Chapter 28.--FEES AND SALARIES
Article 6.--COUNTIES OVER 300,000

      28-615.   County engineer; salary and expenses; assistants andemployees; payment of compensation from county road and bridge fund,when.The county engineer may be appointed by the board of countycommissioners to perform the necessary civil engineering work of thecounty. He shall receive a salary to be fixed by the countycommissioners. In addition, the board of county commissioners shall paythe county engineer's actual and necessary traveling expenses incurredin the performance of his official duties upon the filing of itemizedand verified vouchers signed by the county engineer and approved by theboard of county commissioners. The said board shall allow the countyengineer the necessary and required assistants, engineers, surveyors,superintendents, foremen, accountants, clerks and all other help neededfor the performance of his duties. Allowances for such assistants orhelp herein referred to shall be for work actually performed per diemand such allowance shall be paid only to the person or persons employedupon sworn claims presented to the board of county commissioners.

      All compensation or salaries hereinbefore provided for and for thecounty's civil engineering work, the building and maintenance of roadsand bridges, and the various duties performed under the countyengineer's supervision, shall be paid from the county road and bridgefund in counties not under the county unit system, which funds arederived from the tax levies authorized by K.S.A. 79-1947. Theengineer shall not receive and retain any fees, costs, mileage,commissions or compensation of any kind for any service which he isauthorized to perform because of his office, except as herein elsewhereprovided, but shall turn over such fees, costs, mileage, commissions orcompensation to the county treasurer, and the same shall become a partof the general revenue fund of the county.
