Chapter 28.--FEES AND SALARIES
Article 7.--WYANDOTTE COUNTY

      28-706.   Sheriff's fees, mileage and transportation; deputies;jailers; jury clerk; matron; cook; feeding prisoners.In addition to the salary prescribed by section 22 of this act thesheriff shall be entitled to retain the fees and mileage paid him fromsources without the state of Kansas. He shall not receive any fees ormileage paid him from any county within the state of Kansas, but shallturn over such fees to the county commissioners of his county. Thecounty commissioners of said county are to provide such deputy sheriffswith motorcycles, and other suitable means of conveyance, for the properdischarge of their duties in enforcing the traffic laws and regulationsfor the operation of vehicles and motor vehicles on the public highwaysof the county and state.

      The sheriff may appoint deputy sheriffs one (1) of whom shall bedesignated undersheriff. The sheriff shall appoint jailers, with theapproval of the board of county commissioners and one jury clerk. Thesheriff may appoint a woman not related to the sheriff, as matron of thecounty jail. Such matron shall be a member of the sheriff's force; shallhave all the authority now delegated to a deputy sheriff and shall besubject to removal for cause. The sheriff shall with the approval of theboard of county commissioners also appoint a cook who is to prepare themeals for the prisoners in the county jail. The county commissionersshall pay all the expenses for feeding the prisoners in the county jail.No contract shall ever be made with the sheriff or other persons forfeeding the prisoners.
