Patrol to maintain toll-free hot line for reports of drunken orreckless driving, auto accidents or breakdowns, and criminalactivities--duties of patrol after receipt--false reports, penalty.

43.600. 1. The department of public safety, through thehighway patrol, shall establish and maintain a statewidetoll-free emergency telephone service which shall be operated ona twenty-four-hour schedule. The telephone system shall becapable of receiving reports of an individual operating a motorvehicle while in an intoxicated or drugged condition; carelessand reckless driving; auto accidents; or criminal activity. Thisnumber can also be used to inform the highway patrol that theperson operating a vehicle has vehicular problems.

2. This service shall receive reports over a singlestatewide toll-free number. Upon receiving such a report, thehighway patrol shall contact the law enforcement agency of thejurisdiction where the reported suspected driver or incident wasobserved at which time the appropriate law enforcement officialor highway patrolman may investigate the reported suspect.

3. Any person convicted of filing a false report shall beguilty of a class B misdemeanor and may be fined up to fivehundred dollars.
