Definitions.

173.510. As used in sections 173.500 to 173.565, unless the contextclearly requires otherwise, the following terms shall mean:

(1) "Applied project", any activity which seeks to utilize, synthesize,or apply existing knowledge, information, or resources to the resolution of aspecified problem, question, or issue;

(2) "Board of curators", the board of curators for the University ofMissouri;

(3) "Coordinating board", the Missouri coordinating board for highereducation;

(4) "Department", the Missouri department of economic development;

(5) "Institution", any approved private institution or approved publicinstitution, as these terms are defined in section 173.205, which arecertified as such by the coordinating board;

(6) "Research project", any original investigation for the advancementof scientific or technological knowledge;

(7) "Small business", an independently owned and operated business asdefined in title 15 U.S.C. section 632A and as described by title 13 CFR part21; and

(8) "University", any institution of higher learning located within thisstate which has one or more campuses, offers doctoral level degrees, conductsbasic research activities, and is federally or privately sponsored or funded,or both federally and privately sponsored or funded.
