Definitions, ankle surgery, requirements for performing.

330.010. 1. The word "board" whenever used in this chapter means thestate board of podiatric medicine.

2. The definitions of the words "podiatrist" or "physician of thefoot" shall for the purpose of this section be held to be the diagnosis,medical, physical, or surgical treatment of the ailments of the human foot,with the exception of administration of general anesthetics, or amputationof the foot and with the further exception that the definitions shall notapply to bone surgery on children under the age of one year. The use ofsuch drugs and medicines in the treatment of ailments of the human footshall not include the treatment of any systemic diseases. For the purposesof this chapter, the term "human foot" includes the ankle and the tendonswhich insert into the foot as well as the foot. For surgery of the ankleonly, the doctor of podiatric medicine licensed pursuant to this chaptershall either be board certified in foot and ankle surgery by the AmericanBoard of Podiatric Surgery or shall complete a twenty-four-monthpostgraduate clinical residency in podiatric surgery; provided, however,any newly licensed doctor of podiatric medicine desiring to perform anklesurgery and licensed pursuant to this chapter after January 1, 2005, shallbe required to complete a twenty-four-month postgraduate clinical residencyin podiatric surgery. Nothing in this section shall be construed toprohibit a doctor of podiatric medicine from performing ankle surgery underthe direct supervision of a doctor who is authorized to perform surgery ofthe ankle. Surgical treatment of the ankle by a doctor of podiatricmedicine shall be performed only in a licensed acute care hospital or alicensed ambulatory surgical clinic. A doctor of podiatric medicineperforming ankle surgery shall be required to complete the biennialcontinuing medical education hourly credit requirements as established bythe state board of podiatric medicine. The doctor of podiatric medicineshall have obtained approval of the physician's credentialing committee ofa licensed acute care hospital or a licensed ambulatory surgical clinic.
