The justice of each district court may appoint a deputy clerk who shall hold office at the pleasure of the justice appointing him or her. The deputy clerk shall have the qualifications, powers and duties as prescribed for the clerks of district courts subject to the supervision and direction of the clerk of said court. In the event of a vacancy in the office of the clerk, or whenever the clerk is absent or unable to act from any cause, said deputy clerk shall perform the duties of the clerk.
