Whenever a petition for the laying out or altering of a highway, or appealing from the decision of selectmen, is filed in superior court the clerk shall issue an order of notice, with a copy of the petition, returnable at the next return day of court, and the petitioners shall cause a certified copy of the same to be given to, or left at the places of abode of, one of the selectmen and the town clerk of each town through which such highway may pass, at least 14 days before such return day, and such other notice as the court shall order.
