Surveyors of lumber shall survey all plank, boards, spars, slit work, shingles, clapboards and timber previous to the sale thereof, and shall measure the same if necessary, having due consideration for drying and shrinking, making reasonable allowance for rot, knots and splits. They shall mark the same anew according to the just contents thereof, if requested by the seller or purchaser, and give a certificate of the quantity and sorts, if required, on payment therefor.
