49-5-5408. Local board to define duties of assistant principals Certain assistant principals may be excluded from program Evaluation of assistant principals.

(a)  Each local board of education shall define the job description of all persons employed as assistant principals. If the responsibilities required by the local board do not address the competencies, the assistant principal may, as determined by the local board and with the concurrence of the state board of education, be ineligible for participation in the career ladder program.

(b)  An assistant principal who enters the career ladder program shall be subject to the same evaluations and expectations as principals. An assistant principal who does not advance in the career ladder shall retain any other currently valid certification held by such person, including certification as a career level I, II or III teacher under parts 50-53, this part, and part 55 of this chapter.

(c)  Upon receiving a career level II assistant principal's certificate from the state board of education, an assistant principal may work an eleven-month contract and receive a four thousand dollar ($4,000) salary supplement from the state. An assistant principal who receives a career level III certificate and who is employed on an eleven-month contract shall receive a five thousand dollar ($5,000) salary supplement from the state subject to § 49-5-5308(e). An assistant principal who receives a career level III certificate and who is employed on a twelve-month contract shall receive a seven thousand dollar ($7,000) salary supplement from the state subject to § 49-5-5308(e). These supplements shall be in addition to all other compensation to which the assistant principal is entitled.
