It shall be lawful for any regional jail officer who has been designated bythe superintendent, and who has completed the basic course in firearms forjailers and custodial officers pursuant to subdivision 7 of § 9.1-102, tocarry and use sufficient weapons to prevent escapes, suppress rebellion, anddefend or protect himself or others in the course of his assigned duties.
