§ 1603. -Application; procedure

A person desiring aid according to the provisions of section 1602 of this title shall make application through the selectmen of the town or the mayor of the city wherein he or she resides. The selectmen or mayor shall investigate such person's military or naval record and the need for such assistance by him or her or his or her legal dependents and make report in writing thereon to such committee. The committee or its authorized representative shall make further investigation as it may deem necessary and if satisfied of such person's need of assistance, shall draw upon the funds provided for such purpose for such amount as it may deem necessary in each case. When such additional investigation is deemed necessary, the member of such committee or its authorized representative who shall make such investigation shall receive such salary and necessary expenses as the committee may deem necessary to properly make such investigation. The committee or its authorized representative shall reinvestigate persons receiving aid under this chapter as frequently as is necessary in their judgment and discontinue such aid where in their judgment the need has ceased.
