Chapter 4. Alzheimer's Disease and Related Senile DementiaPrograms

Care or treatment training programs
Sec. 1. The division shall develop new training programs asneeded in the care of individuals with Alzheimer's disease or arelated senile dementia, or identify and utilize existing trainingprograms that satisfy criteria established by the division, for thefollowing individuals who participate or assist in the care ortreatment of individuals with Alzheimer's disease or a related seniledementia:
(1) Physicians licensed under IC 25-22.5.
(2) Registered nurses and practical nurses licensed underIC 25-23.
(3) Social service personnel.
(4) Other health care personnel.
(5) Families of individuals with Alzheimer's disease or othersenile dementia.

Respite care pilot programs
Sec. 2. The division shall establish pilot programs for theprovision of respite care and other supportive services, includinghome care services, for individuals with Alzheimer's disease or arelated senile dementia and their families or caretakers. The purposeof a respite care program is to do the following:
(1) Provide relief to the family or caretaker of an individualwith Alzheimer's disease or a related senile dementia from thestresses and responsibilities attendant to the individual's care.
(2) Prevent or reduce the incidence of inappropriateinstitutional care of individuals with Alzheimer's disease or arelated senile dementia and enable the individuals to remain inthe individuals' own homes as long as possible.

Consultation with support organizations
Sec. 3. The division shall consult with an Alzheimer's disease orrelated senile dementia support organization and other appropriateorganizations in the development and evaluation of:
(1) programs established under sections 1 and 2 of this chapter;and
(2) other long term care initiatives.

Federal funding Sec. 4. The director shall apply for federal funding that becomesavailable to the state for activities associated with Alzheimer'sdisease or related senile dementia.

Grants; annual report
Sec. 5. (a) The division may award grants to be used forAlzheimer's disease or related senile dementia activities to an entitythat does any of the following:
(1) Operates a geriatric assessment unit.
(2) Provides or has the capability of providing diagnosticservices or treatment for individuals with symptoms ofAlzheimer's disease or a related senile dementia.
(3) Provides counseling to families of individuals withAlzheimer's disease or a related senile dementia.
(4) Conducts research or training in geriatrics.
(b) The division shall submit to the general assembly beforeNovember 1 of each year a report on services provided and researchconducted with grant money. The report must be in an electronicformat under IC 5-14-6 and must include the following:
(1) A description of any progress made by an entity awarded agrant under this section in discovering the cause of and a curefor Alzheimer's disease and related senile dementia and inimproving the quality of care of individuals who haveAlzheimer's disease or a related senile dementia.
(2) The characteristics and number of persons served byprograms established with grants provided under this section.
(3) The costs of programs established with grants providedunder this section.
(4) A general evaluation of the programs established with grantsprovided under this section.

Rules
Sec. 6. The division shall adopt rules under IC 4-22-2 necessaryto carry out this chapter, including the following:
(1) Rules for the award of grants under section 5 of this chapter.
(2) Rules to govern respite care pilot projects established underthis chapter.
