Chapter 6. Rehabilitation Engineering

"Rehabilitation technology" defined
Sec. 1. As used in this chapter, "rehabilitation technology" meansthe provision of physical devices or the adaptation of the physicalenvironment to enable persons with physical disabilities to performeveryday activities in a workplace, in an educational setting, or in ahome or other place of residence.

Establishment of program; purposes
Sec. 2. The bureau shall establish a rehabilitation technologyprogram for persons with physical disabilities. The purpose of theprogram is to do the following:
(1) Provide rehabilitation technology services directly topersons with physical disabilities.
(2) Provide training for providers of rehabilitation services toenable providers to program more effectively for persons withphysical disabilities.
(3) Provide training opportunities for individuals desiring toenter the rehabilitation technology field.
(4) Develop a rehabilitation technology model.
(5) Provide a resource for the business and industrialcommunity to increase the productivity of the current or futurelabor force through rehabilitation technology techniques.
(6) Meet the rehabilitation technology needs of persons withphysical disabilities desiring prevocational and vocationaltraining through coordination of services with state agenciesthat provide training and employment services.
(7) Provide assistance to employers and developers in makingall buildings accessible to persons with physical disabilities bymodifying building designs.

Program contents
Sec. 3. The rehabilitation technology program may include thefollowing:
(1) The provision of comprehensive technical services topersons with physical disabilities, counselors, workshop staff,educators, and potential employers to facilitate successfulrehabilitation of individuals with a disability.
(2) The collection and dissemination of information aboutphysical devices and data detailing the effectiveness of physicaldevices in enhancing the functional ability of persons with
physical disabilities.
(3) The establishment of a mechanism for training persons tomore appropriately meet the rehabilitation technology needs ofpersons with physical disabilities.

Contracts for establishment of program
Sec. 4. The bureau may contract with outside agencies to establishthe rehabilitation technology program.
