    Chapter 3. Teacher Education and Continuing Education

Duties of department
    
Sec. 1. (a) The department shall:
        (1) arrange a statewide system of professional instruction forteacher education;
        (2) accredit and inspect teacher education schools anddepartments that comply with the rules of the department;
        (3) recommend and approve courses for the education ofparticular kinds of teachers in accredited schools anddepartments; and
        (4) specify the types of licenses for graduates of approvedcourses.
    (b) The department shall work with teacher education schools anddepartments to develop a system of teacher education that ensuresindividuals who graduate from the schools and departments are ableto meet the highest professional standards.

Accredited schools and departments
    
Sec. 2. (a) An accredited school or department may use the word"accredited" in advertising approved courses and the types ofteachers the school or department is accredited to prepare. Anaccredited school or department may enter into the student teachingagreements specified in IC 20-26-5.
    (b) The department shall revoke the right to use the word"accredited" when an accredited school or department refuses toabide by the advisory board's rules.

Guidelines for teacher education
    
Sec. 3. (a) The department, shall develop guidelines for use byaccredited teacher education institutions and departments inpreparing individuals to teach in various environments.
    (b) The guidelines developed under subsection (a) must includecourses and methods that assist individuals in developing culturalcompetency (as defined in IC 20-31-2-5).

Continuing education
    
Sec. 4. A governing body may adjourn the governing body'sschools for not more than three (3) days in a school year to allow

teachers, school administrators, and paraprofessionals to participatein:
        (1) a session concerning agricultural instruction conducted inthe county;
        (2) a meeting of a teachers' association;
        (3) a visitation of model schools under a governing body'sdirection; or
        (4) a basic or inservice course of education and training onautism that is certified by the state board in conjunction withthe state health commissioner and any other appropriate entitydetermined by the state board.
A governing body shall pay a teacher the teacher's per diem salaryfor the teacher's participation.
