    Chapter 1. General Provisions; Definitions

IC 21-12-1-1
Definitions
    Sec. 1. The definitions in this chapter apply throughout thisarticle.

IC 21-12-1-2
"Academic term"
    Sec. 2. "Academic term" means a semester or a quarter, whicheverapplies.

IC 21-12-1-3
"Academic year"
    Sec. 3. "Academic year" means the period from September 1 of ayear through August 31 of the next year.

IC 21-12-1-4
"Active duty"
    Sec. 4. "Active duty" means full-time service in:
        (1) the National Guard (as defined in IC 10-16-1-13); or
        (2) any reserve component of the:
            (A) Indiana National Guard; or
            (B) armed forces;
that exceeds thirty (30) consecutive days in a calendar year.

"Approved secondary school"
    Sec. 5. "Approved secondary school" means:
        (1) a public high school located in Indiana; and
        (2) any school, located in or outside Indiana, that in thejudgment of the state superintendent provides a course ofinstruction at the secondary level and maintains standards ofinstruction substantially equivalent to those of public highschools located in Indiana.

"Commission"
    Sec. 6. "Commission" refers to the state student assistancecommission.As added by P.L.2-2007, SEC.253.

IC 21-12-1-7
"Contributor"
    Sec. 7. "Contributor" means an individual or a for profitcorporation, partnership, or other for profit entity.

IC 21-12-1-8
"Eligible institution"
    Sec. 8. "Eligible institution", for the purposes of:
        (1) IC 21-12-6, refers to a postsecondary educational institutionthat qualifies as an eligible institution under IC 21-12-6-4; and
        (2) IC 21-12-8, refers to a postsecondary educational institutionthat:
            (A) operates in Indiana;
            (B) is either operated by the state or operated nonprofit;
            (C) operates an organized program of postsecondaryeducation leading to a technical certificate, nursing diploma,or associate or baccalaureate degree; and
            (D) is accredited by:
                (i) a recognized regional accrediting agency;
                (ii) the Indiana commission on proprietary education; or
                (iii) the Indiana state board of nursing.

"Eligible student"
    Sec. 9. "Eligible student" refers to an individual who qualifies toparticipate in the twenty-first century scholars program underIC 21-12-6-5.

"Frank O'Bannon grant"
    Sec. 10. "Frank O'Bannon grant" refers to grants designated as thefollowing:
        (1) The higher education award.
        (2) The freedom of choice award.

"Fund"
    Sec. 11. "Fund":
        (1) for purposes of IC 21-12-6, refers to the twenty-first centuryscholars fund established by IC 21-12-6-2;
        (2) for purposes of IC 21-12-7, refers to the twenty-first centuryscholars program support fund established by IC 21-12-7-1; and
        (3) for purposes of IC 21-12-8, refers to the part-time studentgrant fund established by IC 21-12-8-1.As added by P.L.2-2007, SEC.253.

"Part-time student grant"
    Sec. 12. "Part-time student grant" refers to a monetary awardunder IC 21-12-8 from the part-time student grant fund.

"Program"
    Sec. 13. "Program" refers to the twenty-first century scholarsprogram established by IC 21-12-6-1.

"Scholarship"
    Sec. 14. "Scholarship", for the purposes of IC 21-12-6, refers toa twenty-first century scholarship awarded under IC 21-12-6.

"Scholarship applicant"
    Sec. 15. "Scholarship applicant" refers to an individual whoqualifies for a twenty-first century scholarship under IC 21-12-6-6.

"Scholarship recipient"
    Sec. 16. "Scholarship recipient" refers to an individual who isawarded a twenty-first century scholarship under IC 21-12-6.
