Chapter 9. Authority of Land Surveyor

Seals; authorized use
Sec. 1. (a) The granting of registration extends to the landsurveyor the authority to use a seal of a design authorized by therules of the board. The act of affixing the seal attests to the landsurveyor's acceptance of full professional responsibility for thesealed documents. A person may not stamp or seal a document witha seal while the certificate of the named land surveyor is expired orrevoked.
(b) Collection of field data, note reduction, computation, officeanalysis, and preparation of certificates and reports for a land survey,plan, specification, plat, drawing, or report sealed by a land surveyormust be performed by a land surveyor or an employee acting underthe personal supervision and direction of the land surveyor.

Plats; approval or acceptance
Sec. 2. A plat showing streets, lots, blocks, or any subdivision ofland in Indiana may not be:
(1) approved by a county planning or zoning authority; or
(2) accepted for transfer or recording by a county auditor orrecorder;
that has not been prepared or certified and sealed by the responsibleland surveyor.

Maps; underground workings of mines
Sec. 3. All maps required to show the underground workings ofany mine in Indiana must be prepared, certified, and sealed by aprofessional engineer or land surveyor.

Limitations on practice
Sec. 4. The practice of land surveying does not permit a landsurveyor to design and construct sewage disposal stations, liftstations, or bridges or to prepare engineering plans for theconstruction of engineering projects other than those prescribed inIC 25-21.5-1-7.

IC 25-21.5-9-5 Professional engineers; limitations on practice
Sec. 5. The practice of land surveying does not prohibit aprofessional engineer from doing work that does not involve thelocation, description, establishment, or reestablishment of propertycorners or property lines.

Employees
Sec. 6. (a) A land surveyor:
(1) is personally responsible for designing and directing thetraining, procedures, and daily activities of an employeeparticipating in any part of the land survey; and
(2) shall maintain records that are reasonably necessary toestablish that the responsibility of the land surveyor for theemployee that is required by this section has been fulfilled.
(b) Before a land surveyor completes, seals, or signs a survey,plan, specification, plat, drawing, or report, all procedures followedand the decisions made by the employee who participated in thesurvey, plan, specification, plat, drawing, or report must be reviewedand approved by the land surveyor.
