    Chapter 2. Definitions

Application of definitions
    
Sec. 1. The definitions in this chapter apply throughout thisarticle.

Administer a drug
    
Sec. 1.5. "Administer a drug" means the direct application of adrug, whether by injection, inhalation, ingestion, or any other means,to the body of a patient.

Approved program
    
Sec. 2. "Approved program" means an educational program forphysician assistants accredited:
        (1) by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education forthe Physician Assistant; or
        (2) before January 1, 2001, by:
            (A) the Committee on Allied Health Education andAccreditation or its successor organization; or
            (B) the Commission on Accreditation of Allied HealthEducation Programs or its successor organization.

Board
    
Sec. 3. "Board" refers to the medical licensing board of Indiana.

Committee
    
Sec. 5. "Committee" refers to the physician assistant committeeestablished by IC 25-27.5-3-1.

Dependent practice
    
Sec. 6. "Dependent practice" means the performance of an act, aduty, or a function delegated to a physician assistant by thesupervising physician or physician designee.

Diagnosis
    
Sec. 7. "Diagnosis" means to determine the nature of a disease orother physical or mental condition.

Dispense
    
Sec. 7.3. "Dispense" means issuing medical devices or one (1) ormore doses of a drug in a suitable container with appropriate labelingfor subsequent administration to or use by a patient.

NCCPA
    
Sec. 8. "NCCPA" refers to the National Commission onCertification of Physician Assistants.

Physician
    
Sec. 9. "Physician" means an individual who:
        (1) holds the degree of doctor of medicine or doctor ofosteopathy, or an equivalent degree; and
        (2) holds an unlimited license under IC 25-22.5 to practicemedicine or osteopathic medicine.

Physician assistant
    
Sec. 10. "Physician assistant" means an individual who:
        (1) meets the qualifications under this article; and
        (2) is licensed under this article.

Physician designee
    
Sec. 11. "Physician designee" means a physician:
        (1) who:
            (A) works in; or
            (B) is trained in;
        the same practice area as the practice area of the supervising

physician; and
        (2) to whom responsibility for the supervision of a physicianassistant is temporarily designated when the supervisingphysician is unavailable.

Prescribe
    
Sec. 12. "Prescribe" means to direct, order, or designate the useof or manner of using a drug, medicine, or treatment by spoken orwritten words or other means.

Supervising physician
    
Sec. 13. "Supervising physician" means a physician registeredwith the board who supervises and is responsible for a physicianassistant.

Supervision
    
Sec. 14. (a) "Supervision" means that the conditions set forth insubdivision (1) or (2) are met at all times that services are renderedor tasks are performed by the physician assistant:
        (1) The supervising physician or the physician designee isphysically present at the location at which services are renderedor tasks are performed by the physician assistant.
        (2) Both of the following apply:
            (A) The supervising physician or the physician designee isimmediately available for consultation.
            (B) Either:
                (i) the supervising physician or the physician designee isin the county of, or a contiguous county to, the onsitelocation in which services are rendered or tasks areperformed by the physician assistant; or
                (ii) the physician or physician assistant is practicing at ahospital or health facility, or traveling to or from thehospital or health facility.
    (b) The term includes the use of protocols, guidelines, andstanding orders developed or approved by the supervising physician.

Trainee
    
Sec. 15. "Trainee" means an individual who is currently enrolledin an approved program.
