    Chapter 1. Applicability and Definitions

Application of article
    Sec. 1. This article applies to any incorporated society, order, orsupreme lodge without capital stock, whether incorporated or not,conducted solely for the benefit of its members and theirbeneficiaries and not-for-profit, operated on a lodge system withritualistic form of work, having a representative form of government,and that provides benefits in accordance with this article.

Application of definitions
    Sec. 2. The definitions in this chapter apply throughout thisarticle.

"Benefit contract" defined
    Sec. 3. "Benefit contract" means the agreement for provision ofbenefits authorized by IC 27-11-6-1, as that agreement is describedin IC 27-11-6-4.

"Benefit member" defined
    Sec. 4. "Benefit member" means an adult member who isdesignated by the laws or rules of the society to be a benefit memberunder a benefit contract.

"Certificate" defined
    Sec. 5. "Certificate" means the document issued as writtenevidence of the benefit contract.

"Commissioner" defined
    Sec. 6. "Commissioner" refers to the insurance commissioner ofthis state.

"Laws" defined    Sec. 7. "Laws" means the society's articles of incorporation,constitution, and bylaws, however designated.

"Lodge" defined
    Sec. 8. "Lodge" means a subordinate member unit of the society,whether known as a camp, court, council, branch, or by any otherdesignation.

"Premiums" defined
    Sec. 9. "Premiums" includes rates, dues, or other requiredcontributions by whatever name known that are payable under thecertificate.

"Rules" defined
    Sec. 10. "Rules" means all rules, regulations, or resolutionsadopted by the supreme governing body or board of directors that areintended to have general application to the members of the society.

"Society" defined
    Sec. 11. "Society" refers to a fraternal benefit society to whichthis article applies, according to section 1 of this chapter.
