United States Senate; appointment to fill vacancy; special election
    
Sec. 1. (a) A vacancy that occurs, other than by resignation, in theUnited States Senate shall be certified to the governor by thesecretary of state.
    (b) The governor shall immediately fill a vacancy in the UnitedStates Senate by appointing a person possessing the qualificationsrequired under Article 1, Section 3, Clause 3 of the Constitution ofthe United States. The person appointed holds office until the nextgeneral election, when the vacancy shall be filled by the election ofa Senator in a special election to hold office for the unexpired term.
    (c) If a vacancy in the United States Senate occurs after the lastday on which notice of the special election can be published underIC 3-10-8-4, the person appointed under subsection (b) holds officeuntil the vacancy is filled in a special election held at the time of thenext general election for which notice can be published underIC 3-10-8-4.

United States House of Representatives; special election
    
Sec. 2. (a) A vacancy that occurs, other than by resignation, in theUnited States House of Representatives shall be certified to thegovernor by the circuit court clerk of the county in which theRepresentative resided.
    (b) A special election shall be held to fill a vacancy in the UnitedStates House of Representatives in accordance with IC 3-10-8.
