    Chapter 12. Antique Motor Vehicle Registration

Annual registration; forms; certificates; authentic antique platedisplay
    
Sec. 1. (a) An antique motor vehicle must be registered annually.
    (b) The bureau may adopt a:
        (1) registration form; and
        (2) certificate of registration;
to implement this chapter.
    (c) After December 31, 2007, a person who:
        (1) registers an antique motor vehicle under this chapter; and
        (2) wishes to display on the antique motor vehicle an authenticlicense plate from the model year of the antique motor vehicleunder section 2.5 of this chapter;
must pay the required fee under IC 9-29-5-32.5.

License plates
    
Sec. 2. (a) Except as provided in section 2.5 of this chapter, thebureau shall issue one (1) license plate to the person who owns anantique motor vehicle that is registered under this chapter.
    (b) Subject to subsection (c), a license plate for an antique motorvehicle shall be manufactured according to the bureau'sspecifications.
    (c) A license plate issued under this chapter shall:
        (1) contain:
            (A) the registration number assigned to the registrationcertificate by the bureau; and
            (B) the words "Historic Motor Vehicle, State of Indiana";and
        (2) indicate the year for which the antique motor vehicle hasbeen registered.
    (d) Instead of issuing a new license plate each time that an antiquemotor vehicle is registered, the bureau may issue to the person whoowns the antique motor vehicle a tag or sticker that indicates the yearfor which the motor vehicle has been registered.
    (e) A license plate issued under this chapter shall be securelyattached to the rear of an antique motor vehicle.

Use of authentic antique license plates
    
Sec. 2.5. (a) A person who registers an antique motor vehicleunder this chapter may:
        (1) furnish; and
        (2) display on the antique motor vehicle;
an Indiana license plate from the model year of the antique motor

vehicle.
    (b) A license plate furnished and displayed under this sectionmust be an authentic license plate from the model year of the antiquemotor vehicle.
    (c) Before a license plate is mounted on an antique motor vehicleunder this section, the license plate must be inspected by the bureauto determine whether the license plate:
        (1) complies with this section;
        (2) is in suitable condition to be displayed; and
        (3) bears a unique plate number at the time of the registration ofthe antique motor vehicle.
The bureau shall authorize the display of a restored or refurbishedauthentic license plate, but may prohibit the display of an authenticlicense plate under this section if the authentic license plate is not inconformance with this subsection.
    (d) If an Indiana license plate from the model year of the antiquemotor vehicle is displayed on a motor vehicle registered as anantique motor vehicle under this chapter, the current certificate ofregistration of the antique motor vehicle shall be:
        (1) kept at all times in the vehicle; and
        (2) made available for inspection upon the demand of a lawenforcement officer.
Notwithstanding IC 9-18-2-21, this subsection is not satisfied bykeeping a reproduction of the certificate of registration in the vehicleor making a reproduction of the certificate of registration availablefor inspection.
    (e) The fee to register and display an authentic license plate fromthe model year of an antique motor vehicle is as provided inIC 9-29-5-32.5.

Safety certificates
    
Sec. 3. (a) An application for the registration of an antique motorvehicle under this chapter must be accompanied by a certificate thatindicates that the antique motor vehicle has:
        (1) been inspected for general safety; and
        (2) been found to be in a mechanical condition that the vehiclecan be operated safely on the highways.
    (b) The state police department shall make the inspection andissue the certificate under this section.

Vehicles altered after registration; nonoriginal motor scooterequipment not required
    
Sec. 4. (a) If a person who registers an antique motor vehicleunder this chapter makes substantial alterations or changes to thevehicle after the date of the antique motor vehicle's registration, theregistrant shall have the vehicle reinspected by the state police

department.
    (b) If the antique motor vehicle is not found to be in a mechanicalcondition that guarantees the vehicle's safe operation upon thehighways, the mechanical condition shall be reported to the bureau.The bureau shall do the following:
        (1) Immediately cancel the registration of the antique motorvehicle.
        (2) Notify the person who registered the antique motor vehicleof the cancellation.
    (c) A motor scooter registered under this chapter is not requiredto have equipment that was not original on the motor scooter.

Transfers of ownership
    
Sec. 5. (a) Upon the transfer of ownership of an antique motorvehicle registered under this chapter:
        (1) the antique motor vehicle's registration is void; and
        (2) the license plates shall be removed from the antique motorvehicle by the person who owns the antique motor vehicle.
    (b) A person who is not the original registrant of an antique motorvehicle may not possess the license plates for the antique motorvehicle.
    (c) A person who originally owns the license plates for an antiquemotor vehicle may, for the remainder of the year in which theownership of the vehicle is transferred, register another antiquemotor vehicle under the same registration.
    (d) This subsection does not apply to an antique motor vehicleacquired by a conveyance subject to IC 9-17-3-9. Upon the transferand sale of an antique motor vehicle registered under this chapter, theperson who acquires ownership of the antique motor vehicle shall,not more than thirty-one (31) days after the date of acquiringownership or before using the motor vehicle upon the highways,make an application with the bureau for registration of the antiquemotor vehicle under this chapter.
    (e) This subsection applies only to an antique motor vehicleacquired by a conveyance subject to IC 9-17-3-9. Upon the transferand sale of an antique motor vehicle registered under this chapter, theperson who acquires ownership of the antique motor vehicle shall,not more than sixty (60) days after the date of acquiring ownershipor before using the motor vehicle upon the highways, make anapplication with the bureau for registration of the antique motorvehicle under this chapter.

Property taxes
    
Sec. 6. An antique motor vehicle registered under this chapter isnot subject to assessment and property taxation under IC 6-1.1, asprovided by IC 6-1.1-2-7.As added by P.L.2-1991, SEC.6.

Sec. 7. A person who violates this chapter commits a Class Cinfraction.
