    Chapter 3. Motor Vehicles Used for Official Business

Registration fee exemption; vehicles exempted
    
Sec. 1. A vehicle that is owned or leased and used for officialbusiness by the following must be registered on a date selected bythe bureau but is exempt from the payment of registration fees:
        (1) The state.
        (2) A municipal corporation (as defined in IC 36-1-2-10).
        (3) A volunteer fire department (as defined in IC 36-8-12-2).
        (4) A volunteer emergency ambulance service that:
            (A) meets the requirements of IC 16-31; and
            (B) has only members that serve for no compensation or anominal annual compensation of not more than threethousand five hundred dollars ($3,500).
        (5) A rehabilitation center funded under IC 12-12.
        (6) A community action agency (IC 12-14-23).
        (7) An area agency of aging and the aged (IC 12-10-1-6) and acounty council on aging that is funded through an area agency.
        (8) A community mental health center (IC 12-29-2).

License plate records
    
Sec. 2. The bureau shall retain a record of the license plates issuedunder this chapter.

United States government vehicles
    
Sec. 3. The bureau may issue a license plate under this chapter fora vehicle owned by the United States government.

Permanent plates and registration cards
    
Sec. 4. (a) A vehicle that is owned by an entity that is exemptfrom the payment of registration fees under section 1 of this chaptermay be assigned permanent license plates and accompanyingpermanent registration cards.
    (b) The permanent license plates and permanent registration cardsassigned under subsection (a) are in effect from the time thecertificate of title for the vehicle is acquired by the person that ownsthe vehicle until the certificate of title is relinquished by the person,when the license plate removed is subject to reassignment ordestruction by the person.

Confidential plates
    
Sec. 5. (a) A confidential license plate for investigative purposesmay be issued to a state agency upon the annual consent of thebureau or the Indiana department of administration.
    (b) Other investigative agencies may be issued confidentiallicense plates for investigative purposes upon the annual consent ofthe superintendent of the state police.

Permanent plates; police departments; department of naturalresources
    
Sec. 6. The bureau may issue distinctive permanent plates underthis chapter to each of the following:
        (1) The state police department.
        (2) The department of natural resources.
        (3) County police departments.
        (4) City police departments.

Employees of exempt agency; exemption during term ofemployment; notice of termination of employment
    
Sec. 6.5. (a) An employee of an agency that is exempt from thepayment of registration fees under section 1(5) through 1(7) of thischapter is exempt from the payment of any fees for licensing underIC 9-24-6 while employed by the exempt agency if the director of theagency notifies the bureau in writing that the employee's dutiesinclude driving a commercial motor vehicle for the agency.
    (b) The director of an agency that is exempt from the payment ofregistration fees under section 1(5) through 1(7) of this chapter shallnotify the bureau if an individual who received a license without thepayment of fees under subsection (a) ceases to be employed by theexempt agency.
    (c) Not later than thirty (30) days following the day on which anindividual ceases to be employed by an exempt agency, theindividual must do the following:
        (1) Renew the individual's license.
        (2) Pay the appropriate fee for licensing under IC 9-24-6.
