Application of illumination and visibility requirements;measurement of mounted height of lamps
Sec. 2. (a) The requirements in this chapter setting forth thedistance from which certain lamps and devices are required to renderobjects visible or within which the lamps or devices are required tobe visible apply:
(1) during the times stated in IC 9-21-7-2;
(2) with respect to a vehicle without load; and
(3) when upon a straight, level, unlighted highway under normalatmospheric conditions;
unless a different time or condition is expressly stated.
(b) The mounted heights of lamps or devices required in thischapter are measured from the center of the lamp or device to thelevel ground upon which the vehicle stands when the vehicle iswithout a load.

Number, location, and height of head lamps
Sec. 3. (a) A motor vehicle other than a motorcycle ormotor-driven cycle must be equipped with at least two (2) headlamps, with at least one (1) of the head lamps on each side of thefront of the motor vehicle. The head lamps must comply with thischapter.
(b) Except as provided in subsection (c), a motorcycle andmotor-driven cycle must be equipped with at least one (1) and notmore than two (2) head lamps that comply with this chapter.
(c) A motorcycle manufactured before January 1, 1956, is notrequired to be equipped with a head lamp if the motorcycle is notoperated at the times when lighted head lamps and other illuminatingdevices are required under IC 9-21-7-2.
(d) A head lamp upon a motor vehicle, including a motorcycle andmotor-driven cycle, must be located at a height measured from thecenter of the head lamp of not less than twenty-four (24) inches andnot more than fifty-four (54) inches to be measured as set forth insection 2(b) of this chapter.As added by P.L.2-1991, SEC.7. Tail lamps
Sec. 4. (a) Except as otherwise provided in this section:
(1) a motor vehicle, trailer, semitrailer, and pole trailer; and
(2) any other vehicle that is drawn at the end of a train ofvehicles;
must be equipped with at least one (1) tail lamp mounted on the rearthat when lighted as required in this chapter, emits a red light plainlyvisible from a distance of five hundred (500) feet to the rear.
(b) Only the tail lamp on the rear-most vehicle of a train ofvehicles is required to be seen from the distance specified.
(c) Excluding a truck-tractor semitrailer-semitrailer combinationequipped with a B-train assembly (as defined in IC 9-13-2-13)governed by section 7 of this chapter, truck-tractor, motorcycle, ormotor-driven cycle:
(1) a motor vehicle, trailer, semitrailer, and pole trailer; and
(2) any other vehicle drawn at the end of a train of vehicles;
that is registered in Indiana and manufactured or assembled afterJanuary 1, 1956, must be equipped with at least two (2) tail lampsmounted on the rear that, when lighted, complies with this section.
(d) A tail lamp upon a vehicle shall be located at a height of notless than twenty (20) inches and not more than seventy-two (72)inches.
(e) Either a tail lamp or a separate lamp must be placed andconstructed so as to illuminate the rear registration plate with a whitelight and make the plate clearly legible from a distance of fifty (50)feet to the rear. A tail lamp or tail lamps, together with a separatelamp for illuminating the rear registration plate, must be wired so asto be lighted whenever the head lamps or auxiliary driving lamps arelighted.

New vehicles; rear reflectors
Sec. 5. (a) Except as provided in subsections (b) through (d), anew motor vehicle sold and operated upon a highway, other than atruck-tractor, must carry on the rear, either as a part of the tail lampsor separately, two (2) red reflectors.
(b) Except as provided in subsection (c), a motorcycle andmotor-driven cycle must carry at least one (1) reflector meeting therequirements of this section.
(c) A motorcycle manufactured before January 1, 1956, is notrequired to carry a reflector under this section if the motorcycle isnot operated at the times when lighted head lamps and otherilluminating devices are required under IC 9-21-7-2.
(d) A vehicle of the type listed in section 7 of this chapter must beequipped with reflectors as required in those sections applicable tothose vehicles. (e) A reflector must be mounted on a vehicle at a height not lessthan twenty (20) inches and not more than sixty (60) inches asmeasured in the manner set forth in section 2(b) of this chapter.Except as otherwise provided, a reflector must be of the size andcharacteristics and mounted so as to be visible at night from alldistances within three hundred fifty (350) feet to one hundred (100)feet from the vehicle when directly in front of lawful upper beams ofhead lamps.

Selling or operating vehicles without turn signals or stoplights
Sec. 6. (a) Except as provided in subsection (b), a person may not:
(1) sell; or
(2) drive on the highways;
in Indiana a motor vehicle, including a motorcycle or motor-drivencycle unless the vehicle is equipped with at least one (1) stoplightmeeting the requirements of section 17 of this chapter.
(b) A motorcycle manufactured before January 1, 1956, is notrequired to be equipped with a stoplight under subsection (a) if themotorcycle is not operated at the times when lighted head lamps andother illuminating devices are required under IC 9-21-7-2.
(c) This subsection does not apply to a motorcycle ormotor-driven cycle. A person may not:
(1) sell;
(2) offer for sale; or
(3) operate on the highways;
a motor vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer registered in Indiana andmanufactured or assembled after January 1, 1956, unless the vehicleis equipped with mechanical or electrical turn signals meeting therequirements of section 17 of this chapter.

Buses, trucks, truck-tractors, trailers, and semitrailers
Sec. 7. In addition to other equipment required in this chapter, thefollowing vehicles must be equipped as follows, under the conditionsstated in IC 9-21-7-2(b):
(1) On a bus or truck the following:
(A) On the rear, two (2) reflectors, one (1) at each side.
(B) On the rear, one (1) stoplight.
(2) On a bus or truck that is at least eighty (80) inches in overallwidth, in addition to the requirements in subdivision (1), thefollowing:
(A) On the front, two (2) clearance lamps, one (1) at eachside.
(B) On the rear, two (2) clearance lamps, one (1) at eachside.
(C) On each side, two (2) side marker lamps, one (1) at ornear the front end and one (1) at or near the rear. (D) On each side, two (2) reflectors, one (1) at or near thefront and one (1) at or near the rear.
(3) On a truck-tractor, the following:
(A) On the front, two (2) clearance lamps, one (1) at eachside.
(B) On the rear, one (1) stoplight.
(4) On a trailer or semitrailer having a gross weight greater thanthree thousand (3,000) pounds, the following:
(A) On the front, two (2) clearance lamps, one (1) at eachside.
(B) On each side, two (2) side marker lamps, one (1) at ornear the front and one (1) at or near the rear.
(C) On each side, two (2) reflectors, one (1) at or near thefront and one (1) at or near the rear.
(D) On the rear, two (2) clearance lamps, one (1) at eachside.
(E) On the rear, two (2) reflectors, one (1) at each side.
(F) On the rear, one (1) stoplight.
(5) On a pole trailer greater than three thousand (3,000) poundsgross weight, the following:
(A) On each side, one (1) side marker lamp and one (1)clearance lamp, which may be in combination, to show tothe front, side, and rear.
(B) On the rear of the pole trailer or load, two (2) reflectors,one (1) at each side.
(6) On a trailer, semitrailer, or pole trailer weighing not morethan three thousand (3,000) pounds gross weight, the following:
(A) On the rear, two (2) reflectors, one (1) on each side.
(B) If a trailer or semitrailer is loaded or is of the dimensionsthat obscure the stoplight on the towing vehicle, one (1)stoplight.
(7) On a truck-tractor semitrailer-semitrailer combinationequipped with a B-train assembly (as defined in IC 9-13-2-13),the assembly must have at least the following:
(A) On the rear, two (2) reflectors.
(B) On the rear, one (1) operable tail lamp.
(C) On the rear, one (1) operable brake lamp.

Clearance and marker lamps and reflectors; color displayed orreflected
Sec. 8. (a) A front clearance lamp, marker lamp, and reflectormounted on the front or on the side near the front of a vehicle mustdisplay or reflect an amber color.
(b) A rear clearance lamp, marker lamp, and reflector mounted onthe rear or on the sides near the rear of a vehicle must display orreflect a red color.
(c) A lighting device and reflector mounted on the rear of avehicle must display or reflect a red color, except as follows: (1) The stoplight or other signal device may be red, amber, oryellow.
(2) The light illuminating the license plate must be white.
(3) The light emitted by a back-up lamp must be white oramber.

Clearance and marker lamps; height and location
Sec. 9. (a) A reflector required by section 7 of this chapter mustbe mounted at a height not less than twenty-four (24) inches and notmore than sixty (60) inches above the ground on which the vehiclestands. However, if the highest part of the permanent structure of thevehicle is less than twenty-four (24) inches, the reflector must bemounted as high as that part of the permanent structure will permit.The rear reflectors on a pole trailer may be mounted on each side ofthe bolster or load. A required red reflector on the rear of a vehiclemay be incorporated with the tail lamp, but the reflector must meetall the other reflector requirements of this chapter.
(b) A clearance lamp must be mounted on the permanent structureof a vehicle in such a manner as to indicate the vehicle's extremewidth and as near the top of the vehicle as practicable. A clearancelamp and side marker lamp may be mounted in combination,provided illumination is given as required in this chapter withreference to both lamps.

Clearance and marker lamps and reflectors; illumination andvisibility
Sec. 10. (a) A reflector upon a vehicle referred to in section 7 ofthis chapter must be of the size and characteristics and maintained soas to be readily visible at nighttime from all distances within sixhundred (600) feet to one hundred (100) feet from the vehicle whendirectly in front of the lawful upper beams of head lamps. A reflectorrequired to be mounted on the side of a vehicle must reflect therequired color of light to the sides, and a reflector mounted on therear must reflect a red color to the rear.
(b) A front or rear clearance lamp must be capable of being seenand distinguished under normal atmospheric conditions at the timeslights are required under IC 9-21-7-2 at a distance of five hundred(500) feet from the front and rear, respectively, of the vehicle.
(c) A side marker lamp must be capable of being seen anddistinguished under normal atmospheric conditions at the times lightsare required under IC 9-21-7-2 at a distance of five hundred (500)feet from the side of the vehicle on which the side marker lamps aremounted.

IC 9-19-6-11 Farm equipment and tractors manufactured before July 1, 2006
Sec. 11. (a) This section does not apply to:
(1) an implement of husbandry; or
(2) a farm tractor;
manufactured after June 30, 2006.
(b) A farm tractor and a self-propelled farm equipment unit or animplement of agriculture designed to be operated primarily in a farmfield or on farm premises, if operated on a highway and not equippedwith an electric lighting system, must at all times required byIC 9-21-7-2 be equipped with the following:
(1) At least one (1) lamp displaying a white light visible froma distance of not less than five hundred (500) feet to the front ofthe vehicle.
(2) At least one (1) lamp displaying a red light visible from adistance of not less than five hundred (500) feet to the rear ofthe vehicle.
(3) Two (2) red reflectors visible from a distance of onehundred (100) feet to six hundred (600) feet to the rear whenilluminated by the upper beams of head lamps.
The lights required by this subsection must be positioned so that one(1) lamp showing to the front and one (1) lamp or reflector showingto the rear will indicate the furthest projection of the tractor, unit, orimplement on the side of the road used in passing the vehicle.
(c) A combination of farm tractor and towed unit of farmequipment or implement of agriculture designed to be operatedprimarily in a farm field or on farm premises, if operated on ahighway and not equipped with an electric lighting system, must atall times required by IC 9-21-7-2 be equipped with two (2) redreflectors that meet the following requirements:
(1) Are visible from a distance of one hundred (100) feet to sixhundred (600) feet to the rear when illuminated by the upperbeams of head lamps.
(2) Are mounted in a manner so as to indicate as nearly aspracticable the extreme left and right rear projections of thetowed unit or implement on the highway.
(d) A farm tractor and a self-propelled unit of farm equipment oran implement of agriculture designed to be operated primarily in afarm field or on farm premises, if operated on a highway andequipped with an electric lighting system, must at all times requiredby IC 9-21-7-2 be equipped with the following:
(1) Two (2) single-beam or multiple-beam head lamps meetingthe requirements of section 20 or 21 of this chapter orIC 9-21-7-9.
(2) Two (2) red lamps visible from a distance of not less thanfive hundred (500) feet to the rear, or in the alternative one (1)red lamp visible from a distance of not less than five hundred(500) feet to the rear and two (2) red reflectors visible from adistance of one hundred (100) feet to six hundred (600) feet tothe rear when illuminated by the upper beams of head lamps.
The red lamps or reflectors must be mounted in the rear of the farm
tractor or self-propelled implement of agriculture so as to indicate asnearly as practicable the extreme left and right projections of thevehicle on the highways.
(e) A combination of farm tractor and towed farm equipment ortowed implement of agriculture designed to be operated primarily ina farm field or on farm premises, if operated on a highway andequipped with an electric lighting system, must at all times requiredby IC 9-21-7-2 be equipped as follows:
(1) The farm tractor element of each combination must beequipped with two (2) single-beam or multiple-beam headlamps meeting the requirements of section 20 or 21 of thischapter or IC 9-21-7-9.
(2) The towed unit of farm equipment or implement ofagriculture element of each combination must be equipped withthe following:
(A) Two (2) red lamps visible from a distance of not lessthan five hundred (500) feet to the rear, or as an alternativeone (1) red lamp visible from a distance of not less than fivehundred (500) feet to the rear.
(B) Two (2) red reflectors visible from a distance of onehundred (100) feet to six hundred (600) feet to the rear whenilluminated by the upper beams of head lamps.
The red lamps or reflectors must be located so as to indicate asnearly as practicable the extreme left and right rear projectionsof the towed unit or implement on the highway.
(3) A combination of farm tractor and towed farm equipment ortowed implement of agriculture equipped with an electriclighting system must be equipped with the following:
(A) A lamp displaying a white or an amber light, or anyshade of color between white and amber visible from adistance of not less than five hundred (500) feet to the front.
(B) A lamp displaying a red light visible from a distance ofnot less than five hundred (500) feet to the rear.
The lamps must be installed or capable of being positioned soas to indicate to the front and rear the furthest projection of thatcombination on the side of the road used by other vehicles inpassing that combination.
(f) A farm tractor, a self-propelled farm equipment unit, or animplement of agriculture must not display blinding field or floodlights when operated on a highway.
(g) All rear lighting requirements may be satisfied by having avehicle with flashing lights immediately trail farm equipment inaccordance with IC 9-21-7-11.

Implements of husbandry and farm tractors; required equipmentwhen manufactured after June 30, 2006, and operated on a
highway
Sec. 11.3. (a) This section applies to the following itemsmanufactured after June 30, 2006, when operated on a highway:
(1) An implement of husbandry.
(2) A farm tractor.
(b) An implement of husbandry or a farm tractor listed insubsection (a) must be equipped with:
(1) head lamps;
(2) tail lamps;
(3) work lamps;
(4) warning lamps;
(5) extremity lamps;
(6) turn indicators;
(7) rear reflectors;
(8) front and rear conspicuity material; and
(9) front, rear, and side retroreflective material;
that comply with the standards contained in the American Society ofAgricultural Engineers (ASAE) Standard S279.11 DEC01 or anysubsequent standards developed by ASAE at the time the vehicle wasmanufactured.

Rear reflectors; vehicles not otherwise specifically required to havelamps or lighting devices
Sec. 12. (a) This section does not apply to:
(1) an implement of husbandry; or
(2) a farm tractor;
manufactured after June 30, 2006.
(b) A vehicle, including an animal-drawn vehicle and a vehiclereferred to in IC 9-19-1-1 not specifically required by this article tobe equipped with lamps or other lighting devices, must at all timesrequired by IC 9-21-7-2 be equipped with at least two (2) redreflectors visible from distances of one hundred (100) feet to sixhundred (600) feet to the rear when illuminated by the upper beamsof head lamps.

Spot lamps
Sec. 13. A motor vehicle may be equipped with not more than two(2) spot lamps. A lighted spot lamp must be aimed and used whenapproaching another vehicle so that no part of the high intensity partof the beam will be directed to the left of the prolongation of theextreme left side of the vehicle or more than one hundred (100) feetahead of the vehicle.

IC 9-19-6-14 Fog lamps
Sec. 14. A motor vehicle may be equipped with not more than two(2) fog lamps mounted on the front at a height not less than twelve(12) inches and not more than thirty (30) inches above the levelsurface upon which the vehicle stands. The fog lamps must be aimedso that when the vehicle is not loaded, none of the high-intensity partof the light to the left of the center of the vehicle will at a distance oftwenty-five (25) feet ahead project higher than a level of four (4)inches below the level of the center of the lamp from which the lightcomes. Lighted fog lamps meeting these requirements may be usedwith lower head lamp beams as specified in section 20(2) of thischapter.

Auxiliary passing lamps
Sec. 15. A motor vehicle may be equipped with not more than one(1) auxiliary passing lamp mounted on the front at a height not lessthan twenty-four (24) inches and not more than forty-two (42) inchesabove the level surface upon which the vehicle stands. Section 20 ofthis chapter applies to any combination of head lamps and auxiliarypassing lamp.

Auxiliary driving lamps
Sec. 16. A motor vehicle may be equipped with not more than one(1) auxiliary driving lamp mounted on the front at a height not lessthan sixteen (16) inches and not more than forty-two (42) inchesabove the level surface upon which the vehicle stands. Section 20 ofthis chapter applies to any combination of head lamps and auxiliarydriving lamp.

Stop lamps and turn signals; color, visibility, and operation
Sec. 17. (a) A motor vehicle may be equipped, and when requiredunder this chapter must be equipped, with a stop lamp or lamps onthe rear of the vehicle that:
(1) displays a red or an amber light, or any shade of colorbetween red and amber, visible from a distance of not less thanone hundred (100) feet to the rear in normal sunlight;
(2) will be actuated upon application of the service (foot) brake;and
(3) may be incorporated with at least one (1) other rear lamp.
(b) A motor vehicle may be equipped and when required underthis chapter must be equipped with lamps or mechanical signaldevices showing to the front and rear for the purpose of indicating anintention to turn either to the right or left. If lamps are used for thispurpose, the lamps showing to the front must be located on the same
level and as widely spaced laterally as practicable and when in usemust display a white or an amber light, or any shade of color betweenwhite and amber, visible from a distance of not less than one hundred(100) feet to the front in normal sunlight. The lamps showing to therear must be located at the same level and as widely spaced laterallyas practicable and when in use must display a red or an amber light,or any shade of color between red and amber, visible from a distanceof not less than one hundred (100) feet to the rear in normal sunlight.When actuated the lamps must indicate the intended direction ofturning by flashing the lights showing to the front and rear on theside toward which the turn is made. If mechanical signal devices areused for this purpose, the devices must be self-illuminated when inuse at the times required by IC 9-21-7-2.
(c) A stop lamp or signal lamp or device may not project a glaringlight.

Fender lamps; running-board courtesy lamps; back-up lamps
Sec. 18. (a) A motor vehicle may be equipped with not more thantwo (2) side cowl or fender lamps that emit an amber or a white lightwithout glare.
(b) A motor vehicle may be equipped with not more than one (1)running-board courtesy lamp on each side that emits a white or anamber light without glare.
(c) A motor vehicle may be equipped with not more than two (2)back-up lamps either separately or in combination with other lamps.However, a back-up lamp must not be lighted when the motor vehicleis in forward motion.

Flashing warning lights
Sec. 19. (a) A vehicle may be equipped with lamps that may beused for the purpose of warning the operators of other vehicles of thepresence of a vehicular traffic hazard requiring the exercise ofunusual care in approaching, overtaking, or passing. The vehicles,when so equipped, may display the warning in addition to any otherwarning signals required by this article.
(b) A lamp used to display a warning to the front must be mountedat the same level and as widely spaced laterally as practicable, andmust display simultaneously flashing white or amber lights or anyshade of color between white and amber.
(c) A lamp used to display a warning to the rear must be mountedat the same level and as widely spaced laterally as practicable, andmust show simultaneously flashing amber or red lights or any shadeof color between red and amber.
(d) A warning light must be visible from a distance of not lessthan five hundred (500) feet under normal atmospheric conditions atnight. (e) A motor vehicle used to transport operating crew membersmay display a lamp placed on the top of the motor vehicle withsimultaneously flashing yellow or amber lights that must be visibleas set forth in subsection (d).

Multiple-beam road lighting equipment
Sec. 20. Except as otherwise provided in this chapter, the headlamps, the auxiliary driving lamp, the auxiliary passing lamp, or acombination of these lamps on motor vehicles, other thanmotorcycles or motor-driven cycles, must be arranged so that thedriver may select between distributions of light projected to differentelevations. The lamps may, in addition, be arranged so that theselection can be made automatically, subject to the followinglimitations:
(1) There must be an uppermost distribution of light, orcomposite beam, aimed and of an intensity to reveal personsand vehicles at a distance of at least three hundred fifty (350)feet ahead for all conditions of loading.
(2) There must be a lowermost distribution of light, orcomposite beam, aimed and of an intensity to reveal personsand vehicles at a distance of at least one hundred (100) feetahead. On a straight level road, under any condition of loading,none of the high-intensity part of the beam may be directed tostrike the eyes of an approaching driver.
(3) A new motor vehicle, other than a motorcycle ormotor-driven cycle, registered in Indiana after January 1, 1956,that has multiple-beam road lighting equipment must beequipped with a beam indicator that must be lighted wheneverthe uppermost distribution of light from the head lamps is inuse. The beam indicator must not otherwise be lighted. Thebeam indicator must be designed and located so that whenlighted the indicator is readily visible without glare to the driverof the vehicle so equipped.

Single-beam road lighting equipment
Sec. 21. Head lamps arranged to provide a single distribution oflight are permitted on motor vehicles manufactured and sold beforeMarch 9, 1956, instead of the multiple-beam road-lighting equipmentspecified in this chapter, if the single distribution of light meets thefollowing requirements:
(1) The head lamps must be aimed so that when the vehicle isnot loaded none of the high-intensity part of the light will:
(A) at a distance of twenty-five (25) feet ahead, projecthigher than a level of five (5) inches below the level of thecenter of the lamp from which light comes; and
(B) at a distance of seventy-five (75) feet ahead, project
higher than forty-two (42) inches above the level on whichthe vehicle stands.
(2) The intensity must be sufficient to reveal persons andvehicles at a distance of at least two hundred (200) feet.

Motorcycles; head lamps
Sec. 22. (a) The head lamp or head lamps upon a motor-drivencycle may be of the single-beam or multiple-beam type.
(b) A head lamp on a motor-driven cycle must be of sufficientintensity to reveal a person or a vehicle at a distance of not less than:
(1) one hundred (100) feet when the motor-driven cycle isoperated at a speed of less than twenty-five (25) miles per hour;
(2) two hundred (200) feet when the motor-driven cycle isoperated at a speed of at least twenty-five (25) miles per hour;and
(3) three hundred (300) feet when the motor-driven cycle isoperated at a speed of at least thirty-five (35) miles per hour.
(c) If a motor-driven cycle is equipped with a multiple beam headlamp, the upper beam must meet the minimum requirements set forthin this section and must not exceed the limitations set forth in section20(1) of this chapter and the lowermost distribution of light as setforth in section 20(2) of this chapter.
(d) If a motor-driven cycle is equipped with a single beam lamp,the lamp must be aimed so that when the vehicle is loaded none ofthe high-intensity part of the light will, at a distance of twenty-five(25) feet ahead, project higher than the level of the center of the lampfrom which the light comes.

Standards and specifications
Sec. 23. (a) The Indiana department of transportation shall adoptstandards and specifications applicable to:
(1) head lamps;
(2) clearance lamps;
(3) identification lamps; and
(4) other lamps;
on snow removal equipment when operated on Indiana highwaysinstead of the lamps otherwise required on motor vehicles by thischapter.
(b) The standards and specifications adopted under subsection (a)may permit the use of flashing lights for purposes of identification onsnow removal equipment when in service upon the highways.
(c) The standards and specifications for lamps referred to in thissection must correlate with and, so far as possible, conform withthose approved by the American Association of State HighwayOfficials.
(d) A person may not operate snow-removal equipment on a
highway unless the lamps on the equipment comply with and arelighted when and as required by the standards and specificationsadopted under this section.

United States Department of Transportation regulations;classification of violations
Sec. 24. (a) This section does not apply to a person who owns oroperates a vehicle or combination of vehicles that:
(1) contains parts and accessories; and
(2) is equipped;
as required under regulations of the United States Department ofTransportation.
(b) A person who violates this chapter commits a Class Cinfraction.
