    Chapter 7. Special Restrictions Concerning Bridges, Causeways,and Viaducts

Operation of vehicles over bridges; prohibitions
    
Sec. 1. A vehicle may not be operated or moved over a bridge,causeway, or viaduct on a highway if the weight of the vehicle isgreater than the maximum load that can be carried with safety to thebridge, causeway, or viaduct.

Repair and maintenances of bridges; reduction of weight allowed
    
Sec. 2. The Indiana department of transportation or localauthority, when charged with the repair or maintenance of a bridge,causeway, or viaduct, may reduce the gross load weight allowed onthe structure below the maximum load prescribed in IC 9-20-4-1 andIC 9-20-5 if the authority determines that the maximum load isgreater than the bridge, causeway, or viaduct can sustain withoutserious damage or with safety to the vehicle.

Orders, resolutions, and ordinances; content; effect; posting ofsigns
    
Sec. 3. The order, resolution, or ordinance shall fix the grossweight allowed in percentage or maximum load prescribed inIC 9-20-4-1 and IC 9-20-5. An order, a resolution, or an ordinancedoes not take effect until signs indicating the gross weight allowedon a bridge, causeway, or viaduct are posted in a conspicuous placeat each end of the structure to which the order, resolution, orordinance applies. The signs must be legible from a distance of fifty(50) feet and must be maintained during the time the reduction is inforce.

Sec. 4. A vehicle may not be moved over a bridge, causeway, orviaduct when the vehicle's gross weight is greater than the grossweight allowed on the bridge, causeway, or viaduct.

Sec. 5. IC 4-22-2 does not apply to a restriction or traffic controldetermination under this chapter that is by order of the Indiana

department of transportation and entirely local in nature, applying toat least one (1) described bridge, causeway, or viaduct.
