1-18-2. Purpose and duties of office. The Office of History within the Department of Tourism and State Development shall collect, preserve, exhibit, and publish material for the study of history, especially the history of this and adjacent states. To this end, the office shall explore the archaeology of the region; acquire documents and manuscripts; obtain narratives and records of pioneers; conduct a library of historical reference; maintain a gallery of historical portraiture, and an ethnological and historical museum; publish and otherwise diffuse information relating to the history of the region to schools and communities; and in general encourage and develop within the state the study of history.
