§ 30-298. (For contingent expiration, see Editor's note) Powers and duties ofthe Commission.

The Commission shall have the following powers and duties:

1. Plan, develop and carry out programs and activities appropriate tocommemorate the bicentennial of the American War of 1812.

2. Promote and encourage research and scholarship to increase historicalliteracy of the American War of 1812 and the important role that Virginiaplayed therein.

3. Encourage civic, historical, educational, economic, and otherorganizations throughout Virginia to organize and participate in activitiesto expand the understanding and appreciation of the significance of theAmerican War of 1812.

4. Encourage the development and conduct of programs designed to involve allcitizens in activities that commemorate the American War of 1812.

5. Submit to the General Assembly and the Governor an annual report forpublication as a report document as provided in the procedures of theDivision of Legislative Automated Systems for the processing of legislativedocuments and reports. The chairman of the Commission shall submit to theGeneral Assembly and the Governor an annual executive summary of the interimactivity and work of the Commission no later than the first day of eachregular session of the General Assembly. The executive summary shall besubmitted for publication as a report document as provided in the proceduresof the Division of Legislative Automated Systems for the processing oflegislative documents and reports and shall be posted on the GeneralAssembly's website.

6. Appoint and establish an Advisory Council composed of nonlegislativecitizens at large who have a knowledge of the American War of 1812 historyand an interest in its bicentennial commemoration. Members of the AdvisoryCouncil shall serve without compensation or reimbursement for expenses asprovided in §§ 2.2-2813 and 2.2-2825.

7. Perform such other duties, functions, and activities as may be necessaryto facilitate and implement the objectives of this chapter.
