§ 33.1-193. Closing highways for safety of public or proper completion ofconstruction; injury to barriers, signs, etc.

If it shall appear to the Commissioner necessary for the safety of thetraveling public or for proper completion of work which is being performed toclose any road or highway coming under his jurisdiction to all traffic or anyclass of traffic, the Commissioner may close, or cause to be closed, thewhole or any portion of such road or highway deemed necessary to be excludedfrom public travel and may exclude all or any class of traffic from suchclosed portion. While any such road or highway, or portion thereof, is soclosed, or while any such road or highway, or portion thereof, is in processof construction or maintenance, the Commissioner or contractor, underauthority from the Commissioner, may erect, or cause to be erected, suitablebarriers or obstructions thereon, may post, or cause to be posted,conspicuous notices to the effect that the road or highway, or portion, isclosed and may place warning signs, lights and lanterns on such road orhighway, or portions thereof. When such road or highway is closed for thesafety of the traveling public or in process of construction or maintenance,as provided in this section, any person who willfully breaks down, drivesinto new construction work, removes, injures or destroys any such barrier orbarriers or obstructions, tears down, removes, or destroys any such noticesor extinguishes, removes, injures or destroys any such warning lights orlanterns so erected, posted or placed shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.
