§ 45.1-161.221. Coursing of air.

A. The main intake and return air currents of drifts or slope mines shall notbe in a single partitioned opening.

B. All entries driven in coal shall be in sets of two or more.

C. Underground transformer stations, battery-charging stations, substations,rectifiers, and water pumps shall be housed in noncombustible structures orareas, or be equipped with an approved fire suppression system. Theseinstallations shall be ventilated with intake air that is coursed into areturn air course or to the surface, and that is not used to ventilateworking places. This requirement does not apply to: (i) rectifiers, powercenters with transformers that are either dry-type or contain nonflammableliquid, or battery-charging stations, if they are located at or near theworking section and are moved as the working section advances or retreats,(ii) submersible pumps, (iii) permissible pumps and associated permissibleswitch gear, (iv) pumps located at or near the working section that are movedas the working section advances or retreats, and (v) small portable pumps.Such equipment shall be installed and operated only in well-ventilatedlocations.

D. Changes in ventilation that materially affect the main air current or anysplit thereof shall be made when the mine is not in operation and there areno miners in the mine other than those engaged in changing the ventilation.

E. Each section in a mine shall be ventilated by a separate split of air.

F. Air used to ventilate belt haulage entries shall not be used to ventilateany working place unless approved by the Chief.
