§ 46.2-887. Moving crawler-type tractors, steam shovels, derricks, rollers,etc., over railroad grade crossings.

Except in cities or towns, no person shall move any crawler-type tractor,steam shovel, derrick, roller, or any equipment or structure having a normaloperating speed of ten or less miles per hour or a vertical body or loadclearance of less than one-half inch per foot of the distance between any twoadjacent axles or in any event of less than nine inches, measured above thelevel surface of a roadway, on or across any tracks at a railroad gradecrossing without first complying with this section.

Notice of any intended crossing shall be given to a station agent of therailroad and a reasonable time shall be given to the railroad to provideproper protection at the crossing.

Before making any such crossing, the person moving any such vehicle orequipment shall first stop it not less than fifteen feet nor more than fiftyfeet from the nearest rail of the railroad and while so stopped shall listenand look in both directions along such track for any approaching train andfor signals indicating the approach of a train, and shall not proceed untilthe crossing can be made safely.

No such crossing shall be made when warning is given by automatic signal,crossing gates, a flagman, or otherwise of the immediate approach of a train.If a flagman is provided by the railroad, movement over the crossing shall beunder his direction.
