§ 54.1-2205. Requirements for certification.

A. In order to be certified as a professional soil scientist, an applicantshall achieve a score acceptable to the Board on an examination in theprinciples and practice of soil evaluation and satisfy one of the followingcriteria:

1. Hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of highereducation in a soils curriculum which has been approved by the Board and haveat least four years of experience in soil evaluation, the quality of whichdemonstrates to the Board that the applicant is competent to practice as aprofessional soil scientist; or

2. Hold a bachelor's degree in one of the natural sciences and have at leastfive years of experience in soil evaluation, the quality of whichdemonstrates to the Board that the applicant is competent to practice as aprofessional soil scientist; or

3. Have a record of at least eight years of experience in soil evaluation,the quality of which demonstrates to the Board that the applicant iscompetent to practice as a professional soil scientist; or

4. Have at least four years of experience in soil science research or as ateacher of soils curriculum in an accredited institution of higher educationwhich offers an approved four-year program in soils and at least two years ofsoil evaluation experience, the quality of which demonstrates to the Boardthat the applicant is competent to practice as a professional soil scientist.

B. Notwithstanding the requirements in subsection A, any person appointed toserve on the Board as a professional soil scientist member prior to July 1,1991, shall be deemed certified for the purposes of this chapter.
