§ 65.2-1300. Definitions.

As used in this chapter:

"Health systems area" means those cities, counties and towns in theCommonwealth that are included within the jurisdiction of the health systemsagency for that portion of the Commonwealth, as established by the UnitedStates Department of Health and Welfare pursuant to United States Public Law93-641; however, Scott County, Washington County and the City of Bristol,Virginia shall be deemed to be a part of Health Services Area III asestablished by the United States Department of Health and Welfare.

"Hospital" means any facility in which the primary function is theprovision of diagnosis, treatment and medical and nursing services, surgicalor nonsurgical, for two or more nonrelated individuals, including hospitalsknown by varying nomenclature or designation such as sanitoriums, sanitariumsand general, acute, short-term, long-term and outpatient hospitals.

"Peer review" means an evaluation and determination by a regional peerreview committee of the appropriateness of the level, quality, duration andcost of health care and health services provided a patient based on medicallyaccepted standards.

"Physician" means any person licensed to practice medicine or osteopathy inthis Commonwealth pursuant to Chapter 29 (§ 54.1-2900 et seq.) of Title 54.1.

"Utilization review" means the initial evaluation of appropriateness, interms of the level, quality and duration of health care and health servicesprovided a patient based on medically accepted standards. Such evaluationshall be accomplished by means of a system which identifies any utilizationof medical services above the usual range of utilization for such servicesbased on medically accepted standards.
