§ 9.1-1100. Department of Forensic Science created; Director.

There is hereby created in the executive branch of state government, aDepartment of Forensic Science (the Department), which formerly existed as adivision within the Department of Criminal Justice Services. The Departmentshall be headed by a Director appointed by the Governor, subject toconfirmation by the General Assembly if in session when such appointment ismade, and if not in session, then at its next succeeding session. In makinghis appointment, the Governor shall choose a candidate meeting thequalifications recommended by the Forensic Science Board created pursuant to§ 9.1-1109. The Director shall serve for a term of six years, or until hissuccessor shall be appointed and qualified. Any vacancy shall be filled forthe unexpired term in the same manner as the original appointment.

The Director, under the direction and control of the Governor, shall exercisethe powers and perform the duties conferred or imposed upon him by law andperform such other duties required by the Governor or requested by theForensic Science Board created pursuant to § 9.1-1109.
