40A:9-131.Ā  Acting mayor In every municipality, unless otherwise provided by law, if a vacancy occursĀ  in the office of mayor, by reason of death, resignation or otherwise, theĀ  presiding officer of the governing body shall become the acting mayor until aĀ  successor is elected and qualified.
