SECTION 16-3.1-8

   § 16-3.1-8  Regional center collaborative– Northern Rhode Island. – Notwithstanding the provisions of any general or special law to the contrary,the school committees of the cities and towns of Lincoln, Cumberland,Pawtucket, Central Falls, Woonsocket, Smithfield, North Smithfield, NorthProvidence, Johnston, Foster, Glocester, Foster-Glocester regional schooldistrict, and Burrillville are authorized and empowered to continue and/orinitiate cooperative efforts to provide special education programs anddiagnostic services required by law or regulation, to utilize technology,including without limitation television, to provide limited interestcurriculum, and to provide programs for the gifted and talented, all on acollaborative basis. The various school committees may assign and delegate totheir respective school committee chairs or designee or superintendents ofschools or designee, acting as a regional board, any duties, responsibilities,and powers that the committees may deem necessary for the conduct,administration, and management of the regional center collaborative of northernRhode Island.

   The Northern Rhode Island Collaborative, as a nonprofitcorporation, shall have all the powers provided in the R.I. NonprofitCorporation Act (RI Gen. Laws § 7-6-1, et seq):

   (1) To purchase, take, receive, lease, take by gift, orotherwise acquire, own, hold, mortgage, finance, improve, and use a certainparcel of realty and fixtures thereon located at 300 George Washington Highway,Smithfield, Rhode Island, and any parcels of realty contiguous thereto.

   (2) To create a wholly-owned subsidiary entity for thepurpose of facilitating any of the powers, duties and responsibilities referredto above.
