SECTION 29-6-1

   § 29-6-1  Statement of policy. – (a) The general assembly hereby declares it to be the policy of this state:

   (1) That free public libraries are essential to the generalenlightenment of citizens in a democracy;

   (2) That these free public libraries shall provide for thecultural, educational, informational, and research needs of all citizens;

   (3) That free public libraries are an integral part of theeducational system at all levels and a source for vocational information andcontinued learning following the period of formal education; and

   (4) That it is the responsibility of government at all levelsto provide adequate financial support for all free public libraries.

   (b) The general assembly further declares it to be the policyof this state to coordinate on a cooperative basis the resources of academic,free public, school, and special libraries to meet the expanding needs of allcitizens and that it is the responsibility of government at all levels toprovide adequate financial support to coordinate library resources throughoutthe state for improved library services to all citizens.
